New to the forum, but have been Google searching it for weeks. Grew up in a ranching family and am trying to get the ranch back into shape. I am doing the cleanup myself - as I know from experience if I hire it out, it will look just as bad again in a couple years. Cleanup is a never ending process with mesquite and huisache, at least my cedar is not too bad.

Just got a new piece of farm equipment (the ctl), so am in the process of getting attachments. While I want to use it (and least initially) primarily as a land clearing tool (with fence building secondary), I am undecided about getting a shredder/mulcher/flail mower. My biggest problem trees do not respond well to shredding or mulching (they grow back as bushes) - so am started with a grubber (remove below root ball) and a tree shear (shear and spray). These should take care of them. That however, does not address cutting grass and weeds, some of which used to be an orchard (under trees, with fallen limbs).

FWIW I also have an old tractor (70's) and much older shredder (50's) that I have used in the past. It can get the job done, but leaves a decent mess behind (plus it does not have a cab).

So far I have found Loftness, Bobcat, Rockhound, USMower, and Seppi. Just from looking at specs, it appears the Rockhound and USMower can handle a decent amount of limbs and small brush. Rockhound, Loftness and Bobcat have local (Austin, TX) dealers (none of which probably stock), USMower might have some dealers a 100miles from me.

Anyway, curious what others think of using a ctl to mow, and if anyone has any experiance doing it with a fail mower.

Thanks for the help.

Hello mousehunter,

I would also contact the lumber mills/loggers in the area or
It might be well worth your effort to find out if FECON has
a dealer in Texas from whom you could rent one of their
tracked mulchers.

The thing is a Fecon head on tracked excavator or one of their tracked
mulchers will clear below grade to a certain depth too so take that into account.

The Fecon self propelled tracked mulchers are much stronger in design than the ASV, Bobcat or Caterpillar
compact tracked loader based on the skid steer loader frame size.
