Massey Ferguson 135 Vineyard Diesel
I just got a Massey Ferguson 135 diesel, and need something to tame our 5 acre jungle. I probably will still need to get a rotary cutter, but I haven't seen any good deals locally for any, and while I was searching, I came upon an online auction for a rural county's highway department. Didn't expect it to go for a price I could afford, but I came out high bidder.

Alamo SHD74 Flail Mower

Based on what I can see of the serial number, it's from between 1996 and 1999. Very new for equipment in my possession. Less than $1/lb can't be too bad (remember to add auction fees to the high bid, though.) Now I have to figure out how I'm going to pick up a 900lbs+ mower, I don't have a trailer that's good for something like this. My boss will be helping me pick up the tractor, I'll have to see if he can help with the mower, too. He's got a big backhoe so I know his trailer will do the job.

At over 900 lbs, I'll probably want some weights for my front end.

OK, so now I've got to finish reading the flail mower threads around here.

Looks like you got the unit for a steal. The MF135 with the Perkins is at the bottom end of the range for that mower. You will need some good weights for the front of your MF135 to keep the front down.
One of the advantages of the Perkins is that at PTO speed you are on the far side of the power curve, so when you start to bog the engine down it actually becomes more powerful. This lets you get though tough patches. I was told of a man who used a 135 and a 16' bat wing to mow with. He would have to start in cut grass as it was all the 135 could do to spin the blades up. That tractor eventual snapped the crank due to abuse. I do not think you have to worry about that with a 7' mower.

74 inches, so it's a 6 foot mower, which should be good for my needs.

Hello 80sDweeb,

I am glad to see that a fellow New Yorker has the vineyard model to use.
I love indirect injection engines.
Just be sure to clear the chaff screen on the 135 more often when mowing.
I would check with Wengers of Myerstown PA to see if they have a front
weight frame and suitcase weights from a parted out 135.

Don't forget you can take half cuts if you have heavy growth to deal with.
Leave the rear roller at 2 inches for mowing height if it is not there already.

Happy Mowing
