I bought a used 20 year old john deere pto post hole digger with 14" auger, I went to john deere to get replacement blades and they wanted $100.00 for 2 little blades. I am going to make my own, would leaf spring steel be a good choice? How about an old road grader blade?

I'd go with the grader blade, knowing that it was selected for abrasion resistance and impact toughness. Spring steel selection usually doesn't consider those properties.

For the time you'll have making them you could probably modify the receiver to take regular blades going forward, then you'd be bolting instead of fabricating when the time comes.

Check with TSC as many parts they have for the augers made in the past (current one use the same bolt patterns in may situations). Take bolt spacing measurements and give them a call.

I checked with many of those suppliers such as TSC (online), they have 12" but mine is 14", must be a rare size. Maybe I should call them. One other thought I had was making them from 3" X 5/16" mild steel flat bar and hardfacing the cutting edge, that would the easiest for me. Even if someone in the US sold them by the time I get them to canada with shipping, exchange rate etc..I would likely be back up to the hundred dollar mark. I should be able to make them for 5 bucks

Try using spring steel and harden the face. Much more durable the mild steel.

Do you have a round shaft on your post hole digger where it bolts to the gear box? Might be worthwhile looking at a 12 inch auger from TSC. For a hundred bucks you could have a brand new auger with easy to get and affordable teeth. I've thrown away two other augers because I found the time it took to make my own teeth wasn't worth it.
