I think I'd like to put a stump grapple on my MX4800. Some use with stumps primarily to dig around and move large rocks.
Any thoughts on their usefulness? I'd prefer to keep in under 500lbs. Some are short (36" long) and others are longer (48-56"). Any thoughts on which is better trade off on leverage, jaw force, and visibility?

I love my grapple, but contrary to what some here think, I would never get a single upper style grapple again. Particularly to handle large rocks and stumps which are so irregular.

I guess you are talking about a stump bucket with a grapple.

Short one from Everything Attachments.

Long one from Loflin.

Mine is a Blue Diamond without a grapple. For my machine I like the long length. Since I have a 44" wide grapple, I have not ever wished for a grapple on the stump bucket.

I had a wildcat stump bucket for several years and it was very useful before I bought a backhoe (Later sold it after getting the little hoe).
It was about 36" and seemed a good match for my MX5100. It worked pretty well for digging around trees and breaking the roots. I think having the grapple would have been handy for removing the stump especially if I didn't have a regular grapple.
The bucket was also handy for making some trenches and I used it dig holes to plant some larger trees with root balls.

How was the visability?

WOW, who knew? That would be nice for plucking out big stones. Plus you don't have to exert much force to carry them as they would kind of just sit there in that cradle.

I have no idea what you own, but if you buy pallet forks and a grapple that are "properly designed", they will work together, and be about perfect for both jobs!

If needed, sliding the forks in or out to match the size of the rocks, gives them a cradle to ride in,

same with stumps,

or brush,

As far as I'm concerned, a properly designed single grapple is the best grapple of all...
