Do to moderate to hard clay on the first pull.

If it is in good condition it will turn the soil. if it is used it may need a little adjusting. The colter(that disc in front of the plow is made to cut the sod) and leaves a nice straight forrow.

Hi Garrabo,

I have not had good luck in the past pulling a plow. Though I have not tried it with a BX, I used to have about a 20HP JD with a one bottom plow. In sandy loam soil, I was never able to get the plow to do a smooth job. I have pulled 3-7 bottom plows behind ag tractors so I know what they can do if set right.

On mine, I was never able to hold the plow (tractor didn't have good 3 pt sway bars) in position and I couldn't maintain ground speed due to wheel slippage. If you can't keep the ground speed up, the dirt won't turn over.

If you have access to the unit, give it a try. If you have to purchase it, I'd sure want a money back deal so I wasn't stuck with something I'd not be satisfied with.

Just my two cents,
Ron

I would think that a rotary plow would work better on a smaller tractor. Even better would be one that is rotated by the PTO, like the rotary plow on my Gravely. Haven't seen or heard of any being made though. Think the rototillers on the 3ph are driven by the PTO.

There are some seed bed preparers that are close but require generally 30hp or more to use.

There was a thread on this. Look it up, something about "preparing my soil, etc."

I visited a hippy commune (Twin Oaks: they have a web site) recently as part of my organic gardening class. They quit using tractors to prepare their soil because they compact the earth too much. Instead, they rototill now with a hand guided rototiller and then scoop out wheelbaroow wheel width paths between approx. 4' wide planting areas after.

That should work, from the picture, I see it has a depth wheel, and I think you will definitely need one of those if you use it on a tractor that doesn't have position control lift system.

Clay pulls hard & likes to come out lumpy, esp if wet. But, a molboard plow is a fine way to bust it up. They are difficult to set up for your tractor the first time, there should be no need for stablizers if you can get it set right, etc. After that, getting the plow bottom shiney clean & plowing will be great.

There is some perspective problem with that particular picture, the bottom should be more swept back, but I'm sure just a pic issue.

Not sure about hard clay, but here is what mine does on our rocky soil /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is an old post of mine with more information as well.

thanks for all the input, I will ponder my decision if I will purchase or not. May I ask what is a moldboard plow and
a rotary plow? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Your picture in the first post shows a moldboard plow. I'm assuming a rotary plow looks like a giant disc, although the powered Gravely plow referred to does not. The disc's don't do well in rocky ground, but are supposed to handle clay well.
