JD 4310
We are currently looking at tillers for our JD 4310 (25 PTO HP). We are particularly interested in the Howard line of tillers, including three models: HR-12 (4-tine chain drive), HR7HD (6-tine chain drive), and HR-12 (6-tine gear drive). Does anyone have experience with Howard tillers, particularly these models? Can you suggest prices you've been quoted for 55-60 inch models?

We will be using the tiller mainly for maintaining a medium-large (approx. 1/3 acre) garden, with occasional breaking of sod for new ground in an orchard. Comments on going with a cheaper chain-drive unit, or going for a more-expensive gear-drive unit?

Finally, for anyone with a Howard tiller in Washington or Oregon, could you suggest a dealer (preferably Western Washington or Oregon)?

Many thanks.

JEA, I like Howard tillers. I considered one until I looked into Kuhn. The Kuhn website is not up to date, but do a dealer check and you should be able to locate one. My closest dealer in California is up in Arcata. Either way, your looking at a great tiller. My local dealer sells them and they look tough. Other then that, I can't help you. Rat...

I have 60in. painted and sold as a JD. I have no complaints. I don't remember the price and it was over 10 years ago anyhow.

I have a 42" Howard tiller on my small Yanmar. I believe it's about 16 or 17 yrs. old. It used to be a rental unit, so you know it has seen some abuse. I haven't seen any signs that it has ever had any repairs. It still works great. Sorry, don't know about any dealers in the area.
