Default Gauge Wheels?

Can someone explain a gauge wheel to me? I gather it tracks ground level and provides some sort of control link back to the 3PH to maintain height (or depth) relative to the ground surface. Sounds great. How do I get one?

Are they available as add-ons or have others made them themselves? How have to handled the linkage top the 3PH control, or do you have it control a separate depth control on the implement itself?

Thanks,

Peter

Default Re: Gauge Wheels?

Gauge wheels usually are attached just behind the implement, in such a way that the implement can't get any lower than the wheels allow. An adjustment is generally provided so the height of the implement relative to the wheel can be set. This is enough to overcome the see-saw effect that causes wash-boarding.

Here's a picture of a rake with gauge wheels. http://www.woodsonline.com/catalog/sub2_lelr1.html
