- John Deere 4520 cab... formerly Yanmar 336D
This is more of a report than a question (for once!).
With my last tractor i had a Woods brush bull (5'), but when I purchased my 4520 I wanted a brush hog to match, so went with the MX6 after a little research here and talking with the dealer.
Right around 3 years the spindle broke (like a lot of folks); mine was under warranty, but due to the shape of the deck (not great, sardined from a few rocks and when the spindle broke) Deere chose not to cover it. I was disappointed, but not surprised. I mowed the same ground, but the MX6 didn't hold up at all well. I was curious if it was the size (going to 6' from 5' changes things a bit), BUT I have to say I'm thrilled with my 6' Woods (admittedly I went with the "upgraded" BrushBull extreme, though the price was still less than a new MX6, or whatever they call it now). I gave it more of a workout than the MX6 ever got (dry conditions, tackled some Alder I haven't been able to get to for a few years), and it has held up perfectly (no dents or dings in the deck, though the back (replaceable) plate has some dents from backing in to brush). I believe the Deere blades are thicker oddly, but they certainly didn't hold up as well to rocks rolling around (bending and such, which was the cause of the deck damage (particularly when the spindle broke!).
As much as I like Deere, I have to say, go Woods (or another brand) for a brush hog.
YMMV of course!
