Tractor
Ford 545D, Cat D6N
I just bought my first tractor, a ford 545D. Now Ive been on a dozer for 44 yrs, so I know equipment. I am going to put a ssqa plate on the tractor and rig up two plates. One with forks and one a pipe boom. I want it heavy and stout. Im **** paticular. Oh I cant spell crap! These are permanet plates not temps. So what size metal? Oh would like it 8-10' long, is that reasonable? Waiting on tractor to get delivered so I can order ssqa. Gota find best one of those too. Oh it has a bucket that will get the quick tach too!! And yes Ive read a ton of post, just dont see what Im looking for.

Here is one: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/248095-boom-pole-ss.html

With a long boom pole there will be a lot of leverage on the top lip of the plate.

This can happen if it isn't strong enough. Note the bent top lip above the straight edge.

Looks like the welds weren't very good.

Replaced it with thicker metal and added gussets.

Thanks Xfaxman for info. I think the moderator needs to move thread to build it yourself.

So, what tractor did you buy?

I think what you are looking at building is what I would call a truss boom. I had one on a telehandler I owned. They are really nice but the top attachment on the one I had was much stronger than the skid steer attachments I've seen. Xfaxman is right on track with what he did to reinforce the top lip for this kind of application.

Yep, or even a extendable truss boom.
