I would like to buy some scrap railroad track to weight an implement and fabricate a drag.

Does anyone have a web reference for someplace to buy scrap railroad track in North Florida? Other suggestions?

I am 35 miles west of Gainesville, Florida.

Thanks!

Check with you local scrap yards.

I looked for rail at a small scrap yard once. They said it was illegal for them to buy it from anyone except the railroad, so they never had any.

I have two pieces of 8 feet each that came on my disk, but I have no idea where they came from. I too have not seen any for sale anywhere in decades.

From what I have been told by my friends that work for the rail lines is that the railroad companies now recycle it so getting pieces is next to impossible.

Same story here. I talked to the local scrap yard, and they said they can't buy it without proof of ownership, so they almost never see any. I guess the sections have markings that show what rail line it was made for. If you don't have a receipt from them, you can't sell it.

I have been told that sometimes rail yards will sell it if you can find a way to ask someone...they're selling it either way, but may not want to deal with a small sale.

Have you tried an add on Craigslist? The other place to look is large junk yards and large AGG dealers that may have scrap laying around. RR rail found it way into a lot of old agg equipment.

Why not use a steel beam.
Railroad contractors have small scrap pieces.
Railroad suppliers would not want to deal with small pieces.
Can also look at industrial crane companies. Crane rail is usually slightly smaller than train rail

When they took down the big paper-mill... the sold the rail and locomotive for scrap.

A few pieces were left behind and I was asked if I wanted any... I did get about a dozen nice railroad ties.
