If you happen to get a stuck auger(most folks who have a PHD will at some time), rather than trying to turn the auger with a large pipe wrench and a cheater bar, just turn the PTO shaft to reverse the auger. It takes a lot more turning but it is fairly easy to turn with just a pipe wrench or strap wrench. Many times it only takes a round or two to reverse it enough for the tractor to pull it out unless you auger it in to the hilt.

I never thought about that one. Thanks. I sure learn a lot on here.

I had a very close friend some years back that was helping his son dig holes on the sons farm. He was doing the down pressure thing on the PHD, while his boy was operating it. That thing wrapped him up when the heavy coat he had on got caught. Almost lost one arm and the other was somewhat mangled. He took off his shirt one time to show me. It was quite easy to see how it wrapped him around it. Terrible looking scars completely around him. I would never ever let anyone get within 10' of a PHD when it was running. If the hole is a little bit crooked, so be it. That auger ain't nothing to be around when it is running.

The lack of down pressure on a 3pt digger is why I have a FEL mounted hydraulic unit. Never need a person on the ground.

I have a hydraulic unit for the backhoe, easy to see and easy to position. Makes digging the holes a one man job that is safe.
