I bought the Tarter tiller yesterday while on sale from Tractor Supply, and had a 10% coupon.

With the tiller I asked for the gearbox lube, and was told I needed SAE 80W-90, so I bought 4 quarts. The lube meets API Service GL-5.

Reading the manual after getting home I see Tarter recommends 85W-140, API Service GL-5.

I know zilch about lubes, so should I take the 80W-90 back?

Thanks

Ken

I would follow the manual rather than some salesman. The 85w140 is a thicker oil. 80w90 is about the same as a 40w motor oil.

I have a KK tiller that very likely has the same Chinese gear box as your Tarter. KK recomends 85W140 or triple zero grease with an EP additive (extreme pressure).
I didn't read the manual and dumped in 80W90 that I had at home. After reading through the manual, I saw the recomendation and called KK tech support. I was told the triple zero grease was their recomendation due to the extreme pressures generated as the gear contact and they would drain the 80W90 and find some 000 grease. Not an easy thing to find , but it is the same thing that Snapper uses in their little rear engine rider gear boxes, so i found mine at a lawn mower shop. I believe it is also called "corn header grease" since it is used in some part of a corn header on a JD combine, so a JD dealer might be a possible source for it.

Where did you get the 10% coupon code?

Actually at the time I didn't have one. I get them in the mail about every 3 months, I suppose because I have a TSC account.

I told the manager (truthful) that I was deciding between their tiller and another brand from my Kubota dealer. I said how about a 10% discount to make the decision easier, with no hesitation she said no problem.

Nice job talking them down on price.

Tractor Supply carries 00 grease in quarts for a fair price. I had a KK tiller that was leaking out the gear lube so I've been using this instead. With the remaining grease in the box I figured it was watered down to 000 or less so it would be fine. Seems like a pretty common "fix" for leaky gear boxes.

FYI. I received a 10% coupon code from tractor supply today. I asked the manager about a discount on a tiller that's weathered and he said they have a shipment of tillers on the way and when they come in they will discount the ones they have in stock from 15 to 30%.
