I'm comparing the EA Extreme Heavy Duty BB with a Bush Hog Heavy Duty BB at a local dealer. I could save $500 to $600 by buying the Bush Hog BB locally and it is built pretty tough. I will be using the BB behind a 82HP Kubota quite a bit on my property which is reclaimed mine land and has a lot of rocks and boulders mixed in the ground and some are quite large. I'll avoid the big Uns much as I can but will probably hit an occasional big rock or two. My biggest worry is the rippers. The Bush Hog rippers are installed the standard way with a hole through the frame. The EA BB has the rippers mounted to the back of the square tubing with some pretty beefy brackets welded to the frame member. Looks to me like the EA design for mounting the rippers is would be much stronger and not prone to rip out the back of the square tube cross member if you hit something pretty hard. Anybody have experience with your rippers breaking out the back of the tubing? Is the EA worth the extra $$?

We have several called Xtreme because they are all Xtreme in their recommended HP range. It gets somewhat confusing when someone is describing one.
Will you tell us the exact model(s) you're looking at for better advice?

Also, it will be helpful if we know the Bush Hog model that it's being compared to.
Thanks!
Travis

Well, after trying to pin down the exact model of BB I had seen at the local dealer I checked both the Bush Hog and the Dirt Dog webpages and it seems they are both the same product. I knew it was one or the other because the dealer had both on the lot. None of these BB are rated for my tractor, Kubota M8200 4wd. So now I am confused as to what I actually saw at the dealer since I thought it had the 1/2 in side plates (maybe the sides were 3/8 since I just eyeballed them and did not measure), The BB I was looking at for the EA was model #XDBBV2-78 and also considering the 84" model. No need to do a comparison now because apparently the one I was looking at on the dealers lot is not rated high enough for my tractor. I guess what I really want to know is it common to tear out the back of the crossbar if you hit something solid with the rippers. I will be hitting rock so I need heavy duty. I am leaning toward the EA anyway because of the features and being US made but before I buy want to shop and compare everybody's products.

If you don't want any problems, go with this.

Nice but really expensive. Isn't that one a hydraulic ripper model?

It is. You sound concerned about these others holding up. That Gannon WILL hold up.

If you want to go with ETA, then "ETA-60-125-LSBB-84" would fill the requirements.

I personally would not own a box blade that had to have the rippers individually put down. I switch back and forth to often to even consider that type of operation.

Just my :2cents:

Amen to what Brian said about the hydraulic rippers.

Sounds like you are counting on using your BB a LOT and using it HARD.

You buy one without hydraulic rippers and you'll be very disappointed. Well,, wait,, you won't know the difference so you might not be.

After you've had hydraulic rippers you'll never go back. Spend the money. But what gives you the best service. You'll own this attachment the rest of your life or until your life changes to the point you don't need it anymore. A well built BB never wears out.

I have had the EA 96" on a 88 hp tractor for two years and have had no problems. I have used it quite a bit for driveway/ dirt work and it rides on the 3-pt all winter for snow and haven't bent anything. I remove the rippers for the winter, less for snow to pack between.

I mostly use the rippers for digging out potholes in my 1/4 mile drive, which is a couple times a year. The rest of the time, I'm spreading and leveling material, not digging. If I have a large area I need to dig up I just put on my chisel plow and have at it.

For my use, it's served me well.

Good points so far ... If your going to USE a BB for tough jobs and use it daily DO NOT go cheap. I really like the EA guys there stuff is great but as stated hydraulic rippers are the cats meow. Just my thoughts.
