10kw PTO generator vs 16kw

I can't for the life of me understand the appeal of buying a PTO generator.

A stand alone gasoline genset is cheaper, uses less fuel, and won't rack up hours on an expensive machine.
AND I can't for the life of me understand why people think "everyone else's" needs are exactly the same "as theirs"??

My 10k PTO generator/trailer/electrical hook-up cost me $2500;I don't think you could come close to that with a stand-alone.Again mine is for emergency use only.

I use my Onan commercial quiet diesel rated for 5500 watts the most. It is mounted in the front of my service truck and hooked up to the truck fuel tank. It has been very dependable for me over the last 14 years of use and I am well satisfied with it. It has a Kubota diesel engine and is water cooled, uses a quart of fuel per hour no load and a little over a half gallon at full load per hour. I also have the Honda 2000 and 3000 inverter gensets and these are very handy and portable.

I have used all three of these gensets in Colorado many times and all seem to perform well. Living in the sticks of New Mexico I use generators a lot and one of the most important things to consider is the noise. I like the quiet gensets and am willing to pay extra for the peace and quiet.

That's the struggle I have. I want a PTO generator because it seems like a neat accessory and would be fun to use, but in reality I don't understand the point of them when they cost more than a stand alone unit and wear out my tractor. Even used pto gens seem to be spendy.

Weldernators might be something to look at for the OP?

Just my 2 cents. I am a Generac tech. If you haven't bought your tractor yet some of them have 2 or 3 sped ptos. I have a Hinomoto that has a 3 speed. If you went with the smaller gen you could run the tractor at half speed using less fuel. Just keep in mind the hp is less at half throttle. You should install a hertz meter so you can keep it as close to 60 as you can.

He can do the same thing with the bigger generator too, he just won't be able to pull much out of it, of course that goes for either size generator...

Going to faster pto speeds REALLY lowers the amount you can pull out of the generator, UNLESS you have a VERY big tractor that still makes pretty good pto hp at lower rpm's...

How much power do you think it takes to turn a 10k watt generator? A 40 hp tractor producing 3/4 power could do it no problem. Especially since the generator will rarely be producing maximum output.

That's my point!

It doesn't take much to turn it..........until you put a load on it. And unless you have quite a bit bigger tractor than you need, running the engine slower, (a69 who my post was aimed at, said "half speed") will make the governor slow to respond to loads, which makes a poor power maker!

And YES, I have tried it, and that was MY experience...

When I have run my 10K PTO generator on my 44HP tractor;to get to the proper HZ ,I believe it was about 2,000 rpm's.I can run my whole house and garage, freezer, frig, furnace,tv,computer ,what ever with no problems.
My biggest draw is in the spring when I am hatching(and the reason I purchased the gen.);if I lost power then I could loose my whole hatch and chicks.I have as many as four incubators going with 1200 eggs set.
