Ford 9700
Hello everyone. I understand this may be a noob question and I have searched through the forums, and have not found a good answer. I am being offered a Cat 1 ripper at a really good price and my tractor has a Cat 3 hitch. Is it possible to attach the Cat 1 implement, with bushings and adapters, to my Cat 3 tractor. I have a Ford 9700 and the ripper is a Rankin model. Is this a case of the wrong equipment at a great price is still the wrong equipment?

That's a pretty big jump, but just check to make sure your lower arms will swing close enough together to hook to the CAT 1 implement. It should work. You will need to get sleeves to bring the implement pin diameter up to the tractor hitch diameter.

I predict you tear it apart rather quickly.

Unless it is free, it's to much $$$. IF you could even get it connected to your 3pt (doubtful) you will destroy the implement in short order.
I wouldn't even get it if it was free, simply a waste of time IMO.

Would you go play baseball and use a toothpick for your bat?

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

This may (or may not) help:

Bad idea. You will turn the cat 1 impliment into scrap in a short time. Cat 3 impliments are built much heavier to handle the level of power your tractor can put out.

Yep, I'd look for a bigger ripper. 13,000# and 150 HP is not a good match for Cat I

It's not a good match for a "noob" either. Hopefully the OP has more tractor experience than he's letting on.

Even if you could get it on there, and even if you didn't instantly pretzel it, you'd be driving around with about 110 horsepower and 8,000# that you aren't using.

Unfortunately, as you are maybe about to discover, implements for this size machine are gonna be costly. They are designed to stand up to constant use and designed to do lots of work at once in order to utilize the size of the machine. This means that they weigh a LOT and will be priced accordingly.

Rick,

Welcome to TBN. Nice tractor!!! They are pretty rare around here.

As stated above, ripper is too small for any hard use.

Post pics if you decide to try it.

Wow, all the negativity. If the task could be done with a Cat I attachment on a Cat 1 tractor, it will get it done on a large tractor. Of course, if you hook it on a tree root or big rock, you can tear it up, but if we're talking about normal soil, it will work fine. My only concern would be if the lower arms will swing in enough. Then keep it throttled down and enjoy. If it does tear it up, it will probably be useful scrap.

Over the years I've seen some incredibly mismatched tractors and attachments but the job got done.
