I recently ordered a WoodMaxx 8" hydro feed chipper and it arrived Monday. It should have taken longer based on their website but it showed up in a week so their shipping speed is excellent.
When I unloaded it I noticed it was well packed and nothing was missing. I did noticed they added an RPM gauge and a PTO safety shield that attaches to the chipper both of which are a nice addition. My 15 year old son and I put it together after dinner and it took about 3.5 hrs from the unloading to ready to run. We took our time, checked all the bolts, greased everything and looked it all over. I can say it is very well made, welds seems good and everything was powder coated. I did have a few small spots that got scratched in shipping but it was not due to Woodmaxx not wrapping it well. it was very well wrapped in plastic and protected. Seeing it is a chipper I am not concerned about a mark and nothing was bent up or damaged at all.
I do recommend having a second person there to help assemble the feeder shoot as it is heavy and takes a little bit of pushing and pulling to get everything lined up perfectly. Easy with the help of my son but by myself would have been difficult.
Tonight I finally had a break in the weather and got to try it out. Started with a few smaller 1-2" limbs - chipped them right up without any hesitation. Next we grabbed a tree that died (Maple) - not huge but about 30' long and 5" at the base. We slid it up into the chipper and in it went - chips flew about 20' out and in no time it was gone. No fuss, no issues at all, heck the tractor didn't even seem to notice it was chipping (running it on MX5100 Kubota).
We chipped some other limbs and trees with branching going every direction and it simply fed them in and chipped them. Worked great! I don't have much time on the unit but so far I am VERY impressed with the machine and the hydro feed is well worth it. I have owned a "major" brands 4" self feeding chipper and it was a nice unit but the hydro feed is WAY better. No pushing, twisting and bending stuff, just load and walk away to grab the next branch!
The one thing I noticed when I was chipping is I need my chain saw/oil/gas so I can cut some other trees and get them cleaned up. Off to the shop we went for a quick addition. Here is what we came up with. Nothing fancy, just used some left over wood from the archery target holder I build for my son. I mounted it with one "L" bracket that uses an existing bolt on the chipper and the pin that holds the top link attachment point on. It comes off with one screw and pulling the hitch pin. Could be easily taken off in 1 minute. Nothing fancy but keeps the items I need close at hand and will hold either of my chainsaws. Seems like something Woodmaxx may want to make out of metal and offer as an accessory.
