Backhoe backhoe question

I've got a new Century 3647, 4 wheel drive, with the new Cummins. I did not need the FEL, but really could use the backhoe. I've had some people tell me you can use the tractor and backhoe without the FEL, and others say it should never be done. Any ideas?
The Century dealer says the backhoe must have the FEL because it uses the subframe and pump, etc.
But I've seen companies like Bradco which offer aftermarket backhoes using a 3 pt. hitch connection, no FEL required.
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using the 3 pt. system instead of the subframe?
I'm stumped.

I'll let the more mechanically inclined tackle the hard facts - but basically a 3pt BH is going to be a lighter duty unit - and it should be. A BH can put a lot of stress on the tractor's frame and subsystems. If you're not intending to do heavier work with it, then I'm sure a 3pt arrangement is fine.

I think having a FEL will help a lot with stability and balance. Not only is the weight better distributed, but I use the FEL as another stabilizer when I'm using the BH. I drop it down to the ground just enough to make solid contact, but not lifting my wheels off the ground.

True, most subframes tie into the loader mounts. 3-points are Ok for lighter work but a subframe mounted hoe is always better. As far as no FEL, if you go subframe mount you'll most likely need to buy at least the loader mounts. But that's kind of silly so just get the FEL, you'll use it for more things than you think. If you go 3-point and no FEL you need enough front mounted weight to balance the tractor.
