Very nice work. You'll get half the juice with very little pressure depending on your apple type and how ripe the apples are. Also on how chopped up the pulp is. Our press is manual and has a worm gear and about a 8" T handle at the top. No idea of how much pressure that configuration puts out.

I always wanted to take the log splitter and hake a STRONG bucket and plug fir it. Then just press straight apples without grinding. But never got to it.

My grandfather wanted one for years and eventually found the remains of a nice outfit and rebuilt the press. Part of the grinder was missing so my mother sent off for a grinder kit and I assembled it. I think it was his birthday present. When everything was working well my grandfather decided he only wanted to make a small quantity in a glass. I guess dementia had set in by then. Granddad has been gone for years. The press and grinder work great and my brother still makes up an occasional batch of cider.

Tom's post reminded me. Ours is a screw type press as well. We used to borrow a press with the factory made lever to add pressure to the screw. I think it was around 30 inches long.

Tom,
The part about the log splitter reminded me. My granddad said his uncle used to have the hired men make a trough from a log. Throw pears in it and crush them up with some kind of maul to make pear cider. Your log splitter would have probably done the job.

Really great execution.
Might consider a pulley/belt cover to protect your loved-one from your family (or the other way around) :drink:

Really nice design and build!
If you find you want / need more power on the press simply reversing the cylinder orientation will increase the pressure substantially.

I've been worried about the potential of contaminates/hydraulic fluid...so, I skipped the log splitter idea. Trying to isolate the cylinder....on the off chance of a problem.

I agree, this is the prototype...so its lacking in some basic safety items...but thanks for the input!

You mean reverse top and bottom? How would that help?

It won't help a bit. The cylinder will still have to retract (the weak direction) to work the press.

To get more pressure on the press, you would have to mount the cylinder above the lever so that it extended to work the press.
