I am thinking about making a 3pt sprayer or buying one already made without the pump. I've also seen sprayers at farm sales with siezed up pumps.

So anyone got any tips on PTO powered pumps? What to buy or avoid? Where to buy? How much they run? Do they they need to be filled with oil every time you use them? If so what procedure do you use to fill them and keep them filled?

I just bought a PTO roller pump from TSC the other day. This was the 7500 pump with PTO adapter and torque bracket. The max pump output is 19.2 gallons a minute. Price was $129.

Don't know the answers to the rest of the questions cause I'm new to this particular aspect. Need to read the directions yet.

You can get a pto pump for $70. If you plan to spray Roundup or other harsh-type chemical, then get the better ones for $200 or so.

Any farm & fleet type store should have them.

I run diesel fuel into mine every fall, about a 1/2 gallon or gallon. Not perfect, but seems to hold up here in Minnesota where freezing is as bad as rust.

They have some different models, made with different material, but my experience has been that they will definitely rust and seize. If that happens, you can loosen all four housing bolts enough to get it to turning (I put mine in a vise to do that), then slowly tighten them all again while turning the pump shaft. I found that putting mine away full of antifreeze (Prestone) prevented such problems. Of course if you have ever seen a parts breakdown, or just take one apart, you'll find they're quite easy to overhaul. I had one that was seized that I took apart, then cleaned the corrosion off everything in my sandblasting cabinet (using glass beads), put it back together and worked good as new. So, if it's seized too bad for my first suggestion to fix it (just loosening all the housing bolts), then it's still not hard to repair.

A Hypro 6500 is a good pump for your use. Search for other posts about sprayers. Search for "Hypro". Parts are available. Three metal alloys are available. Cast iron, Nicast, and silvercast which is like stainless steel.

All are correct about keeping it clean. If you add some 3/4" camlock fittings at the inlet and outlet then you can easily disconnect the pump from the sprayer for cleaning and storage. I pour some motor oil in mine and run it on the tractor for a minute before storing it. Hypro pumps are very repairable. See their web site.

The 12v electric pumps you find on 15 gallon sprayers are pretty much consumer grade items that are not as durable.

First time I used my little Hypro pump, I put it away wet. It seized, but could be loosened easily, with the help of a vice...no apparent damage. Since then, I give it a few shots of WD-40 and let it air dry in the garage for several days. Also, spin the shaft every day or two. Then, after a week or so, I pack it up and put it away. That has worked OK for the last few seasons.

My sprayer came with a Hypro 6500. A couple years ago when Quality Farm and Country was bought out by TSC, I picked up a repair kit, an entire back-up 6500, and a Silvercast 6500 for $85 for the whole lot /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I think I'm set for life. I feel like I stole the whole thing. I probably won't need the silvercast but knew it was worth five times what I paid for it, so what the heck...

Anyway, the repair kit contains replacement rollers and seals. The only unique tool you might need beyond a typical set is a shop press to press in the seals.

I remove my pump every fall, spray WD40 in the ports, rotate the pump a dozen times, or so, then repeat with clean motor oil. A good flush with water and a neutralizing solution in the spring prevents residual oil in your spray for you first spray job of the year.
