My neighbor gave me a 15kW Onan generator. It's probably about 30 years old.
The problem is, the unit does not put out power. The Diodes had been replaced (but the neighbor thinks one may have been installed wrong...he's no electrician and neither am I.
Does anyone have any experience with this generator?
I'm not looking for repair techniques...more interested if it's worth putting a couple hundred dollars in to have it repaired.

BTW, this is a PTO powered generator.

Generators aren't super complex machines. Check to see if the windings, gearbox & bearings are still good. If so, pretty much most other parts can be replaced reasonably. Look for a manual if you can. Old manuals told you how to diagnose & fix things unlike modern manuals.

Thanks for the info! I do have the manual and I even found a pdf version online.
But, I know nothing about electrical things...might be a good time to learn!

Roy,
I would have it checked out by a shop and be sure to let them know about checking the diode installation. You should be able to get an estimate of repairs for less than a $100. Cummins would be the service outlet as far as I know. You could call your local dealer and ask a few questions.

That's my plan, but I wanted to see if I could get any info on TBN first...mostly to see if it's worth putting any money into a repair.

Does it have a capacitor? Is it excited?
