Hey everyone,

I recently picked up a 6ft Ford grader blade and was concerned it might tear up my concrete driveway, I have seen Polly and rubber cutting edges you can buy for them but I figure I would ask, if I made a cutting edge out of wood, would that work? My driveway isn't a large one and my current choices are the front end loader or the grader blade. I figured wood would break before it tore up the driveway and wouldn't scratch the concrete as much. I wood be willing to give it a try lol. Thanks

John

If your driveway doesn't have any cracks or deformities for the blade to grab, it'll be fine. It won't be heavy enough to seriously scratch the concrete. Do you run chains on the tractor? If so, they'll do wayyyy more damage than the blade. :)

I've used my rear blade to clear my neighbors drive plus the concrete apron going into his garage. The only real scratches in the concrete is when the blade encountered gravel on top of the concrete. The blade drug the gravel along and put visible marks on the concrete. Even at that - it wasn't a big deal.

No I will not be running with chains, tractor is 4wd so I figure it will get around just fine. My property is mainly flat. This will be the first season with the tractor and I have maybe 100yds of gravel drive and 80yds of concrete to clear. I have a few expansion joints sticking up, other than that it's pretty flat and in good shape concrete.

I also don't have any pics of the blade on the tractor but I repainted the blade and left it Ford Blue instead of painting it green lol

You could always bolt a rubber edge on it for the winter.

I have to give the credit to my father, he's the one that found the blade and painted it, he bought it off a old farmer a few miles from my house, the guy bought it new but said he only used it 2 times on his driveway to push snow, this blade has never seen work yet. The guy said that it was scratching up his blacktop so he stopped using it, it's been sitting outside ever since, the guy sprayed penetrating oil on her once a year so she didn't seize up. My dad bought a can of Ford blue spray paint and sprayed it just today, he said he put grease on the logo so the paint wouldn't stick and wiped the grease off after he was done, it came out nice, it may look funny on a JD but I'm a Ford guy first lol but it's actually worth more blue than green lol.

A few before pics

I would have much rather had a 7ft blade being the tractor is like 5.5ft wide, any angle to the blade and it won't cover the tire tracks. That being said I'm only down $150 on this blade so I can't complain too much lol.

A peice of wood is cheaper than a bolt on pre fabbed rubber cutting edge, I can't really justify spending $300 for a rubber edge. I'm broke remember . In all seriousness I would prob buy a horse stall rubber mat and cut me a strip out and drill my own holes before I buy one for no more than I'm gonna use it.

I'm not a bolt-on guard guy. So I've got the rubber guard bolted on and I wanna work my gravel drive. Now what??? Or,,,, I've been working my drive and it snows,,,,, oh crap,,,, I gotta get that guard bolted on...... For me that would be endless. :)

I have seen guys use old tires cut into strips... those are free.
