Kubota B2601
Hello,
Long time reader, first time poster. I'm looking to buy a tiller or disc for my Kubota B2601 19.5 PTO HP. 540 RPM. I'll be breaking around 2-3 acres and I'm torn on what to get. A 4-5ft disc or a 4ft tiller...

Any input for my tractor size would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome! Are you planting a garden or just replanting your yard? What type of soil do you have? Any rocks or roots? The tiller won't like those. The tiller will get the soil more fine per pass, BUT, you will need a super slow low gear. You can go faster with the disk but it will take more passes.

You need a PTO powered roto-tiller, assuming you have HST transmission.

To function well as a primary tillage implement, a Disc Harrow needs 22" diameter pans or larger. A B2601 can only pull a Disc Harrow with 18" pans in secondary tillage applications and only under ideal soil conditions.

Go with a PTO powered 48" to 60" roto-tiller for which a B2601 has ample chassis weight and ample horsepower.

I'm putting food plots in. Some soil has been turned before other areas are in the woods and this will be the first year ever turned

Thanks! Some of the ground will have a lot of roots and rocks. Virgin soil. Still go with a tiller?

Not sure what you are planting. Most seeds only require a minimal depth of tillage. In timber you aren't going to like a PTO tiller. Well, I should say, your PTO tiller isn't going to like timber.

Any type of disc tool will scratch up enough loose soil to cause seeds to germinate and grow.

Back to the first statement, what are you planting?

Between the plots: Winter wheat/medium red clover/white clover/turnips/oats. Small seeds except the oats and rye. Nothing that requires big depth. Also some Egyptian Wheat as a screen.

For food plots and that acreage my vote would be for a heavy disc. If you can find a disc were the rear gangs can fold up over the front gangs this will allow cutting deeper on the first passes.

Tillers don't like roots , rocks, long grass, vines, etc..

Any disc. Then broadcast the seed. Then drag anything over it to put a bit of cover on the seed. A cattle panel or hog panel with a heavy post or log tied on it makes a great "harrow". :)

Will any disc thats cat 1 work? Or will some connections be too high for my 3pt? I believe my tractor falls in the compact range
