How do you all get the oil out of a gearbox that doesn't have a drain plug?? Besides turning a 600lb implement upside down, or using a tube to siphon the oil out?? I need to change the gear oil in my bush hog and finish cut mower, just looking for the easiest way to do it. I think they (Harbor Freight?) sell a little hand pump that will get most of the fluid out? TIA for your suggestions.

I used the $6.00 Harbor Freight one to change the gearbox oil in my Woods finish mower. It didn't get all of it out, but most of it.

The HF one is cheap enough that you can just throw it away when you're done with it if you don't want to deal with leaks, drips and keeping it clean.

I get the oil warmed up and use 50cc syringes with silicone tubing attached to the syringe. Easy to measure what comes out, replace the same amount.

I use a plastic turkey baster available at most dollar stores. It gets most of the oil out.

I have owned several bush hogs and finishing mowers. The maintenance manual from the equipment manufacturer only recommends checking the oil level and topping it off when it is low. I have one bush hog that I have used over 25 years and have never changed the gear oil and never had a problem. Perhaps, the manufacturer is correct.

I usually wrap some hay twine and/or barbed wire around my output shaft, thereby allowing the bottom seal to become a drain.

I wanted to buy this for extracting oil and gear oil, has anyone bought this, and will it work with thick gear oil.

Brake bleeder kit. About $20 at automotive store.
I use one for things like this all the time , mostly when I overfill oil in small engines. I've never actually used it to bleed brakes.
