Light duty 6\' bush hog?

What does everyone recommend for a 6' bush hog?

It will be used behind a Kubota L3830. Pretty much just light duty. I'll be using it to mow 15 acres, 3 times a year. The first time will be the worst. However, my fields haven't grown up in sapplings yet. Pretty much just thick grass right now.

I've been leaning towards a King Kutter. Tractor supply sells them for about $650-$700. My dealer wants to sell me a Woods for $1200-$1300. I feel like I should get the better one, but just can't justify the extra money. I'm already over budget, another $600 makes it that much worse /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you keep the blades sharp and don't run over too much "stuff", a lighter duty brush hog should last many many years.

I paid $900 for my Woods BB72, and it's allegedly a "medium duty".

The King Kutter will do you just fine. I have a 5 foot King Kutter that I got about 4 years ago. I give it very heavy use, maintaining over 50 acres, and doing brushing hogging for neighbors and friends. I've gone through tons of saplings, and I've never had to do anything to it, except very occasionally sharpen the blades.

We bought a Crocodile brand 6 foot cutter from DHE for mowing the feild grass at work. It was 675 dollars It mowsthe thick grass 2 feet tall and has a finish as good as some lawn mowers. We have an old heavy duty Ford Mower for heavier work.

I like KK.. but if you need to save a couple more bucks.. go for a howse... It is a tad cheaper.. and just a tad lighter.. I would consider howse as light/medium duty.. and KK medium duty.

For what its worth.. my stepfather has had (2) howse 6' hogs in the last 13 years.. the second one looks like it has survived re-entry from space... has had every piece of steel on it welded or bent... but the gearbox doesn't leak, and has nice tight seals and bearings. He pulls these behind a JD 2420.. I'm guessing that is about a 50hp critter... And he pretty much mows anything he can get to bend down under that big green machine.. including 2" woody stuff that he really shouldnt.

When i saw that.. I knew I was doing fine with my 5xx dollar KK instead of a 1000+ squealer or NH 59X series mower I had been looking at.

So far my KK is on 4 seasons of cutting.. I've ran about 1-2 shear bolts a year thru it.. and cut down ant mounds.. green stuff to 2" and woody stuff to 1 - 1.5 inch with no hesitation... Cuts 3' tall thick wet grass, and 7' tall stemmp ragweed and dog fennel, as well as 3' tall thick and tangled bramble with 1/2 - 3/4 inch woodt stem sections behind my 33 hp NH 1920.. KK is showing NO signs of wear yet.. However I do sharpen my blades at the beginning of the season, and paint them with cheapy paint before i put it up at the end of the year..

I have run a 6' light duty Howse for 4 years. I do mostly pasture mowing. But I have done and occasionally still do brush cutting as I reclaim areas grown up by my creek. It has taken all I give it with no complaints. Well OK, maybe some banging and clanging when I hit some large stuff such as larger saplings and deadfall and stuff washed up out of the creek.
