I have the opportunity to purchase one of two disc harrows. These will be for food plots and a little light farming (up to 8 acres max of maintained planting). I have a gift certificate for $100 to TSC and see their angle frame harrows for under $600. But my dealer has a normally $1500 heavy duty disc harrow (Land Pride) sitting on the lot (brand new) and he'll give it to me for a little under $1,000. The Land Pride is a big step up in quality and weight. Question is, do I spend more (which I don't want to) and get a lot more, or will the angle frame harrow do the job okay. The TSC weighs in at around 560lbs while the Land Pride I think is a little under 900 lbs. I don't want to buy another one of these for a long time. Both are the 6' models. You can see the quandary is putting out about $500 cash at TSC versus twice that much at the dealership. I don't mind spending the money if the Land Pride is that much better and longer lasting than the King Kutter.

For my money I'd spend the $1500. I think those cheaper ones are just too light to do the job alot of the time. They work ok after you have already worked up the ground with a plow or chisel plow. But if you're trying to work ground that hasn't been worked any then you will appreciate the extra weight.

Get the Landpride. I got the same Landpride disc and have been very happy with it. I used to wonder about saving a few dollars when making such purchases, not any longer. I buy the better quality product even if it takes me a littler longer to save the money to get it. The Landpride disc works great and is built much better than any KingKutter disc.

I've been looking for one myself. A local used implement dealer has some nice older units, very heavy for around $500. You'll definitely want the weight of the heavier unit for it to be of any value to you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree, get the heavier one. It will cut in better. Otherwise, you'll be trying to add weight to the angle frame one to make it work.

I thought of adding weight to the King Kutter, but do I really want to mess around with that? I find at times I spend more time trying to make an inferior piece of equipment or tool work right, so I'll probably go for the better piece this time. I would buy used, but can't find one locally in good shape and at a good price.

By all means get an older, and heavier disk. I recently bought a 12 ft. tandem disk (an International, I believe) for around $1500. It's built like a tank and heavy enough to sink the Queen Mary.

How much horsepower do you need to pull a 12 foot disk?

You won't pull one with a CUT I can guarantee you that. You're probably looking at 60 or 70 hp, possibly with a smaller hp but you won't pull it very fast.

I'm pretty much limited to 6 foot due to the areas I want to disc over. Some are woodland grass roads that I'll overseed, others are strips along woodland edges for food plots. Also, I have a 40HP New Holland with R4 tires.
