I got a JD 513 brush cutter years ago that has rusted out, been patched, and rusted out again. I was not wanting to spend the time making a new deck so I picked up a Titan 60" cutter. The JD has a gearbox oil filled. The Titan box is grease filled. The Titan box is louder than the JD box. Is that cut of the gears or does oil filled quiet things down? Yes, the grease level seems to be ok.

I will eventually get a new deck bent and I will finish welding on all the other steel for the JD just because it is quieter and the design does a better job breaking up horse manure than the Titan.

I can't hear the gears on my LP 60" cutter. I am surprised that you can hear them on yours over the tractor engine.

My 5' KingKutter just has a quiet pulsing hum. I am actually surprised how quiet it is.

I have never heard gear noise on any of the many cutters I have had. Some grease filled some oil.

With the noise of the blades, and tractor.....If you can hear the gears over that I'd be surprised

I had the gear box on one of my Woods rotary cutters get VERY loud one time, it was the day it went completely out of oil!! I came home, put oil in it and it quieted right down, but in about an hour or so, I checked it and it was empty again!

From that day on, I've put grease in that box and I've never heard another peep out of it again, and THAT was many MANY years ago. That gear box today is just fine, but the rest of the cutter looks like junk!!

One of these days, I'm going to go buy a Woods medium duty Brush bull, as Woods rotary cutters have been the BEST cutters I've ever owned or even used.

My BH286 has a very quiet gearbox. The cutter noise is mostly blade "whirr". Partly because I've been happy with my BH, I recommended a smaller 5 ft. BH to my FIL (forgot the exact model). From day one, the gearbox has been horrendously noisy! It started out oil-filled; after the first season, oil was gone. I assume he ran over some wire and ate the gearbox seal. Rather than replace the seal, he refilled with cornhead grease. I assumed that would quiet it down. NOT! Still just as noisy.

I don't use any spl. grease in the gear box on mine, I use the cheapest grease I can get, it all works just fine.

As the gear box heats up, any grease in there will flow plenty good enough to lube the bearing ect...

My country line box cannot be heard over the tractor engine. There is noticeable noise from the blades at start up for a second until they get up to speed. After that you hear the blades turning but not the gear box.
