I recently inherited a Superior 394 sickle mower, but it consistently breaks the first guard (the one closest to the power head.) Anyone have thoughts on why it breaks only this one. I do not believe I have hit anything like rocks etc. I believe it is some kind of adjustment issue, but I do not know what adjustment needs to be made. Anybody have experience with issues on this mower?

The first guard takes bigger holes and rivets . I've had mine for a few years now no issues . Every guard after the first one has small holes . If that's not your issue I am at a loss

I have the 7' version Superior mower I use for road side mowing. I break a couple guards or/and sections a year typically. But the location varies depending where the rocks or buried trash is that I hit. I can't think what your problem is if the bar is straight and there is not excessive play between the sliding bars. Is that first adjustment clamp loose or cracked ? Is the shoe missing or worn so thin that the bar rides in the dirt on the driven end ? I am sure you checked all this but it seems strange to be so consistent. Seems like something wrong mechanically like you are thinking.

Could be the registration is to tight or too loose? Here is what the manual says about registration. Has this been done to your mower recently? Ken Sweet
"BLADE HOLDER REGISTRATION
It is possible that in time the registration of the blade holder will be necessary. This is undertaken
as follows:
1) Loosen the two M12 nuts “A” (pict. 16) wrench 22.
2) Adjust the relative M10 screw “B” (pict. 16) leaving a clearance of .012 - 0.20 inches be
tween the blade holder and the tooth.
3) Tighten the two M12 nuts “A” (pict. 16) and check the clearance with a thickness guage.
** We advise that this operation is carried out by authorized dealers."
