A pic would help. Did JD make a model 48 tiller? The only reference I can find is your post here and another web site.

I just got it home today, that was what I was told it may be, after having it at home I found a S/N plate
Not sure if the F035D is a model, a quick search did not turn up anything

I found a parts listing on the JD Website that looks to be identical for ....
48-Inch Rotary Tiller (for 318, 420 and 430 Tractors)

This was from MTF (My Tractor Forum) ....

Note that the drive shaft end is a male/spline.

The model number of the tiller is *M02902X525303.

If it helps, the grooming mower is a model 260 and has the same male drive shaft end.
The driveshaft has to be turned CCW to drive the blades correctly (looking from the tractor
toward the mower). Both implements are marked as 2000RPM.

It has been a long time since I have seen the original tractor that these were used on.
All I can recall is that it was a very stout, beefy, garden sized John Deere tractor.
It had weighted wheels (perhaps all 4) with a loader and I think agricultural or commercial tires.
It was stocked up as a very serious little tractor with a loader. I don't recall if it was 2wd or 4wd.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

It's a Model 48 Tiller and fits the JD 420 or JD 430 Garden Tractors.

What you have is the Model 35 tiller for a John Deere 400 Garden Tractor. The John Deere 400 had a weird pto speed of 840rpm. The later 300s, 420 and 430 all had 2000rpm rear ptos. So, the only thing the 35 will fit is a John Deere 400. That is, unless you change the gearbox on the tiller. That would not be cheap. If the 400 pto is like the later ones, it turns opposite the standard 540 systems. They are heavy duty tillers. I have a 48 for my 332.

Technically this could be adapted to a Cat1 3 Point and used on a standard compact tractor,
I have to check what my max PTO speed is but it is higher than 840rpm?

When I bought my 48 it was being used on a small Kubota. He replaced the end with a standard 540 end so it would work with his tractor. Problem was that he was spinning it the wrong way! He obviously didn't use it much, but system is designed to run only one way.

Not sure what you mean by "He replaced the end with a standard 540 end so it would work with his tractor."

But I am going to use this on a small Kubota, my PTO spins clockwise looking at the tractor, so therefore the tiller drive shaft would be spinning counterclockwise looking at the tiller and when I turn it that way the tines run in the right direction. I made sure of this before I dragged it home.

The 2000 rpm pto attachment end is a male fine spline and the tractor has a fine spline female. The "standard" 540 is a coarse spline female end for the attachment and the tractor has a coarse spline male. A 2000 rpm attachment cannot attach to a 540 without changing the end of the driveshaft. I have a cat 1 limited Ruegg hitch on my 332. I bought some long threaded 0 to 1 conversion pins on ebay. The threads were long enough to go all the way through both sides of the mount. I put nuts on the outside and inside of the mounts so they wouldn't shift or twist.

tiller.PNG this chart show parts catalog as pc1927 that will work to access the online parts catalog. Shows was for 420,430, & some 316's and 332's.
