I have an old JD25A flail that I picked up second hand. It came with no manual but I was able to look it up online to get the oil and grease specs. However, unlike the recent models, the gearbox only has one fill plug instead of one for adding and another for checking if it’s full. How do I make sure I’m filling it but not overfilling it? Any advice?

Thanks!

Same way you fill/check a rear end housing on your truck. Remove plug. Add fluid until it runs out. Replace plug.

I'd say given the position of the plug....fill to the lip of the plug.

That’s what I figured but wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Sometimes gearboxes will have a vent plug in the top of the case. That can be removed and used to pour in fluid if that's easier. Either way, use the side plug to check full level.

Yep, as others mentioned.

I just checked gearbox oil in my 25A yesterday and took it out for a few laps around my field. (Was checking if I have the governor on my tractor adjusted properly- it's pretty close!)

Mine's old, beat, twisted, and if ya lift it while it's spinning or back up one or two of the blades will contact the hood and make a terrible racket!

I am, however, always impressed with the finish it leaves behind, despite having VERY old knives and being beat to snot.
