I recently had some land logged (thinned) and now I have a LOT of privel in the 1 to 2ft range growing. Before resorting to spraying, I'm wondering if a ratchet rake would rip it up by the roots.

Ideas?

I do not have Privet in Florida.

I have Yaupon Holly, about the same size when immature, between Oaks.

Ratchet Rake will tear similar spreading stuff out by the roots, but if Privet spreads via roots, some residual bits will sprout in the soil needing later minor spot herbicide application to kill 100%.

So, if the RR will pull out 95% of the plant, that still not is enough to eradicate root spreading plants without some herbicide spot application.

Readily available 2, 4-D based herbicide is probably what you need to complete Privet kill, rather than Roundup/Glycophosphate.

I have had good success with Gordon's BRUSH KILLER from Tractor Supply Company, which only requires 2-1/2 tablespoons of concentrate in a gallon sprayer, so a half gallon of concentrate lasts a long time.

Ratchet Rake is also excellent at collecting and piling brush, much superior to a Landscape Rake for this task.

Gordon's BRUSH KILLER is THE BEST!
I use it full strength, with a small throw away brush attached to a longer stick, (me not bending down) to paint it on fresh cut locust tree stumps.
It works GREAT. No new new locust shoots....EVER!
Also works great on bittersweet. For that, I use it double strength....sprayed.

Thanks guys! Anyone else have experience with this? We also have Yaupon Holly but not as much as privet.

Both need to be cut off, then treat the cut stumps immediately. I use 25% Remedy / 75% Diesel painted liberally on cut stump. If you delay treatment, even a few hours, the cut stump has already began to “heal” and treatment is futile.

I have lots of yaupon growing up around base of oak trees.

If you don’t have much to deal with, you can use a cut stump / vine treatment from Bonide. Greenlight has a similar product. I like the Bonide as it comes with a cap mounted brush. Less waste.
