Default Thinking about a log winch for pulling stumps?

Have a piece of raw land that we need to put a road and several build sites in.

Wondering if anyone has ever left the stumps long and hooked their winches to them through a snatch block or two and uprooted them successfully?

Mostly sand where we are at, so I'm thinking this would work?

I would like to recommend using the right tool for the task. I think you’d be much happier and it would be significantly safer. The cable could fail, slip off or break the stump off and there will be a tremendous about of kinetic energy built up coming for you. A back hoe or better yet a track hoe would make short work of this task

It's either going to be my tree puller attachment or potentially a log winch.

    Larger equipment is not feasable.

How big are the stumps in question. With the tree puller on the CTL I can make fast work of 6Ē and less trees. ( as in Iíll run against an equal sized mini any day ) A puller is considerably less effective on a tractor. Given enough blocks and tackles a winch will pull anything, but thatís not a time or cost effective option.

Look up "pulling stumps" on YouTube.Using the "lever method" not block and tackle.I have a bunch to pull this spring and that's the way I am going.

    With a long enough lever........

I take it you haven't cut the trees yet, leave as much log on the stump for leverage as you are able to. If you can cut them 6' or more will be your best chance for making this work.

With enough heavy duty blocks you can make it work. Pay close attention to working load limits of everything involved and make sure you understand which components are subject to several times your line pull. A skidding winch is a wonderful tool to own. Hopefully it'll do what you want without requiring a small fortune worth of blocks and heavy duty chain, but once you own it, you'll love using it in the woods.

Mostly I grow vegetables. I get to make firewood too, but not as much as I'd like. And if I'm really lucky, I get to make some maple syrup.

I found it easier to get stumps out by leaving the tree whole and cable it from extension ladder height. Get the weight of the tree working with you. Dig around the base with an FEL and push.
Or a backhoe or stump grinder.

A 13mm will but will be just slightly larger than a 1/2" nut.

Leaving the tree attached for a weighted lever definitely helps.

4570 is correctomendo. First choice... push the trees over. Second choice cut the trees with HIGH stumps, then push over. Third choice, dig the stumps out with a trackhoe. When building right of way logging roads that is the way we do'er now a days. It is efficient and quick and you don't have huge craters like the old days when we used to dynamite the stumps or split them with a stump splitter on the back of a D8.
