I am going to purchase a disc hiller the question I have is what is the diffrence between the ones with one disc on each side vs the ones with doubles on each side. The ones with doubles cost quite a bit more just trying to figure out if the price is worth it. What size disc do most people use.

I adapted a cultivator to use as a hiller;works pretty good and still have the use of the cultivator when needed.
All bolt on.
Note;disc were turned after picture was taken(back-wards in pic.)

A friend of mine gave me an old soil ripper, which is a tool bar with cultivator tines, from his JD M. I designed the conversion to 3ph, and he helped make it, as he still worked in a machine shop part time.

Below is a picture of my disc hiller arrangment to make raised beds. I bought 20" discs from Agri Supply.

Agri Supply has a tool bar gizmo called a Keulavator that would work for this.

I have a single disc (each side) hiller/bedder...not sure what advantage a second set of discs would be...I did add a small (shallow) furrower to the center and I added a couple of 'S' tine sweeps that are set to cover my rear wheel tracks...

I am convinced that I need a hipper/hiller as well. Stevenstractor.com has this for $650. I'm considering the time/effort of building one out of an old disc harrow and a toolbar that I have. Anyway, take a look and tell me what you think, please. (BTW, I have no association with the dealer.)

It depends on how wide of beds you are making and how big of discs you have. I make 3' wide beds (3' at the base not at the top) and I use 16" single discs. they work fine but that is all the wider I would want to go with a single disc and a 14" disc wouldn't get me enough dirt moved.

I have hilled potatoes with single discs in the past and it was good but not good enough since the dirt did not pile high enough to fully cover the plant. The addition of a second set of discs behind the first one fixed that problem so I would say for this purpose, two sets were better than one.
