Quick question...Any reason to get a front PTO kit for a SCUT in a location that sees little to no snow and where I have no need for a sweeper? The reason I'm asking is that as the older my SCUT gets the more I see the cost of the parts rise. Right now I'm looking at a 30-50% premium being charged by JD just because of the age of my SCUT. The wife and I talked so I'm trying to buy everything I think I might need for my 2305 now since the price has been steadily rising due to the model being replaced. I will keep the 2305 as a second tractor even when we buy our big property and a new tractor (dreaming right now). We don't have more than a few days of snow where I live so I have no need for a front blower (I know lots of they are hydraulic) and I also have no need for a sweeper. Is there anything else I might really need a front PTO for? I personally don't see a need for a front PTO on my SCUT but I'm scared I might be missing something. I just can't think of anything that I wouldn't be running off my rear PTO since we don't get any snow here that would work better on a front PTO. Right now, I don't see any reason to buy the PTO extension kit before it goes up in price more or gets discontinued.

Am I correct or am I missing something? I grew up a city boy and my wife is a city girl but my heart is redneck as can be so bear with me. I know enough to know there are people out there that will always know more than me.:) Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks...

Short answer: No. Use a rear scraper blade for the little snow that you get. If you haven't needed a front PTO up to this point, why would you need to suddenly add it just because Deere is jacking their prices up? Seems like the jacked up pricing is a great reason NOT to buy a front PTO kit.

I agree with mcfarmall.

I understand your concern and the logic behind your question. Your profile doesn't say if your 2305 has a FEL, but then we're back to the same question... if you haven't needed one up to now, then there's no pressing need to get one.

Thanks for the replies...glad to see I was right in my thinking and there is no real need for a front PTO for the average person. I was totally racking my brain and I could not come up with any attachment that doesn't have a 3ph version or a hydraulic version available. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something. I would have hated not to buy it and then down the road one of you guys on here posts something about the most amazing front PTO attachment that you have been using for years that I had never heard of. :D

On big tractors like my deutz fahr agrofarm (100hp range), there's an option for a front 3ph and from pto.

It's rarely used here in North America but in Europe, they use the front pto to say mow and the rear pto to collect..

Any variety of actions that you would need to make 2 passes on with a tractor or need a second tractor essentially.

Other uses that I've seen here in Canada is to have a front snow blower and rear blade or salter.
However most set ups are a blade in the front and either salter in the rear or a reversed snowblower...

Having owned my tractor, I do regret not getting the front 3ph without the pto simply because I could use it for "something". Even with a pto it would be fun for the snowblower...

Had I had a front 3pointhitch I might have been able to use a rear scraper blade on the front and maybe a water tote in the rear, but do I NEED it? No. Just that I think it would be a better resale value and I might be able to find some uses for it later on.

Then again I could always use the loader to achieve the same results.

In your situation, if you didn't need it and can't even find a need for it, then you don't need it. Do you want it? If not then no.

For the price you might swell equip the tractor better or get a new attachment so you don't feel like you missed out on anything

Using a FEL front mount mower, is hydraulically powered, not PTO, but still a front implement. Needs a bath and paint before going into service. I prefer to mow the grass before driving over it, flattening it in the process w/ my wide tires.

Many front PTO options w/ 3 point linkage and one hyd remote on 100 + hp AG tractors retails for $14,000.

I just priced this option on a new Massey 5713 SL.

Snow blower
Rotary broom
Middle mount mower
Some rather uncommon flail mower setups

Those are the main uses for the center PTO I know of. I didnt see a need or get on on my new L4060 even though it was a cheap option.

+1 on the flail.

I saw a tractor with a front mounted flail and a rear mounted one on like a backhoe style boom that offset it for the ditch..

Technically my flail can be mounted in front. Just need a different bracket, probably some caster wheels for the front & a different gearbox cover.

A boom mount mower would be cool, but I barely have enough power as it is. Most of not all boom mount mowers are hydraulically driven. And as tractors dont have enough hydraulics, which means running a PTO driven pump to get enough hydraulic power. I suppose you could use a center PTO for that & the rear PTO for the other flail. But CUTs aren't going to have enough power for that. And you'd probably be better off with a crankshaft mounted pump in that scenario than a center PTO anyway.

Good points brought up already...

My tractor has a front PTO and I never used it before, but thought about hooking up a small PTO generator just so my tractor has 220/120 volt capability without tying up the rear of my tractor for other work.

Just a thought
