I worked in SE Turkey for a couple of months back in 1987, in a town called Tatvan along the shore of Lake Van. It was located about 60-80 miles from the USSR, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. I remember thinking at the time that with all the trouble the US was having with the USSR, Iran, and Syria, if a serious security problem developed Iraq would be the place to go for refuge! How times change!
I learned a little Turkish while there, and remember that at the start of dinner I usually would tell the waiter "Bir bardok sharrap." I'm sure the spelling isn't right here, but saying this usually got me the glass of wine that I was looking for!
