Default Now That\'s a Fertilizer Spreader!

Today I went to the feed store and purchased a fertilizer blend 15-15-15.

The fertilizer spreader was free with the purchase and had to be returned by the next morning. The spreader was a tandum weighing about 2000# with 1500# fertilizer for a total of 3500# or so. The tandum was about 8 ft wide and had a 8 inch wide gear that ran on one tire to turn a hydraulic pump. Takes a lot of power to turn the hydraulic pump based on the wear on the drive wheel. The hydraulic pump drives a motor that moves the conveyer in the bottom of the sloped stainless steel body of the spreader. The rear gate sets the amount of fertilizer that dispenses to the whirleybird type dispenser. The whirleybird is also driven by two hydraulic motors to set a constant width.

Wonder what size tractor it normally takes to pull one of these. It is probably out of the class of a BX, but I believe I could have pulled it through loose soil with a 4WD Jeep Cherokee - although I did not try it.

The system is designed pretty clever as it dispenses independent of the speed of the tractor pulling it - unlike the mechanical models.

Fertilized about 7 acres in 1 hour. Now wonder if it will ever rain. Has anyone else used one of these types? Sure worked well.

That sounds like the one my closest neighbor uses to fertilize our pastures. He pulls it home from the co-op with his half ton pickup, then pulls it in the pastures with his old 85hp Oliver.

Guess it was heavier than I thought. After it was empty, I couldn't pull it up the gravel road on my driveway with the Jeep Cherokee until I put it in 4WD. Guess 4WD is as handy in cars as it is in tractors!!! {smile]
