I'm looking to buy a 12" dirt auger for my 3 point post hole digger. It's got to be at least a 48" length because I need to get below the frost line in northern Minnesota. Anyone know of a good internet site to buy one? Thanks - I just found this forum, and I will be back.

Jerry, I think you may be able to get one through my dealer who can probably order one for you and have it shipped directly to you. Check him out at www.bigtractorsupply.com Dave Williams is his name, and tell him Kiotijohn sent you. John

They are not all compatible. Be sure you get the proper one for your powerhead. Also you may have to get an extension to get it to 4 feet. In S. Minnesota I had to be 4.5' down (with the base flared) to be by the book.

Grren Mfg, I have their 12" auger thats 42" its a little short of your 48" so an extension might be needed...good unit and well made
The auger is well made...the EM5000 fits perfectly on my JD 4100.. see link below

just a side question, but do you have enough lift on the 3ph that a 48" auger will clear the ground when it is mounted on the PHD?

No way I could use a 48" auger on my Kubota B2910 with Rhino HPHD PHD, I'm pretty sure. THe standard auger length just clears the ground by a few inches...

Henro,

That's the way it is with my standard (42", I think) Woods auger on my B2910. Maybe 6" or so clearance above the ground when moving. I'm wondering if using one of the other mounting holes on the boom wouldn't allow it to raise a bit more.

I'm still wondering how zuiko flares the bottom of a 4.5' hole! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Geeze, I put fence posts in about 3 feet deep and the bottom of that hole was a long ways away. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

By hand, it is certainly not fun and easy though. Especially if you get a picky inspector. Funny the inspectors don't give you any tips on how to do it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They have inspectors in Minnesota for post holes ??????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif ... surely not!
You have got to be drilling holes for something else. Darn, 4-1/2 feet is a long way to go just for a fence post. Will frost heave actually throw a fence post buried at 3' out of the ground if you put 4 lag bolts at the base of the post?

You have to excuse the ignorance of a poor Texas boy.

This was for footings. For post holes I don't put them below the frost line... that would require some huge posts. I just put them in 3 feet. I think everyone else does the same.

Not sure how big of a problem heave is on them, hard to tell since there are so many other ways to screw up a post.
