spraying fish emulsion

I'd like to use a sprayer(12v) to spray fish emulsion and other good smelling stuff on some of our crops but am concerned it may clog the sprayer. Anyone out there ever spray fish emulsion? Or, does anyone recommend a reasonably priced sprayer? I have a carry-all I hardly ever use that I can mount the sprayer to.

not sure, but usually that stuff has chuinks, so spraying will cause you some problems with cloggs I'm sure, and cleaning out that NICE smelling clog will earn you some not gonna get near me points with the little woman! anyhow good luck, but I'm sure there are a few different noaaels that will spray the stuff as long as the pump can PUMP it. I'm sure if you mention this to the neibors they will tell you that you will be wasting you're time and not to even try it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tony I am sure that there are many different brands of fish emulsion on the market some being a bit thicker than others. That said I have always used Drammatic liquid fish fertilizer. I buy the concentrate in gallon jugs and thin it before use. I have used a watering can, pump-up sprayer, and hose end sprayer all successfully without clogging to apply the fertilizer on my vegetables and other plantings.

Naturally fish emulsion does have a somewhat unpleasant odor but it only lasts for a short time and it's not nearly as bad as manure. This stuff really works wonders! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My wife has gotten used to the smell--well, she likes the end-results anyway. I haven't gotten used to applying the stuff with a watering can though--it takes too long to try that on our 120 ft + rows, about 20 of them!

Thanks for your reply. Where do you but Drammatic? I once tried another brand in a fertilizer attachment going to drip tape in our rows, but the filter clogged. Now, I have to do it with a watering can!

they do make BIG spray nozzels but you are then putting out A LOT and have to have large pump too.

if you can gravity feed a 55 gallon barrel from the FEL out a HOSE would work well, (actually a 30ngallon works too, use 3/8" hose fitting on bottom, just hneed the height for flowing ability...
when you said SPRAYING I was thinkging of a field not rows. rows are easy with above method.

I had considered using a barrel and hose, but I'm trying to coat the leaves pretty thoroughly--foliar feeding. Since there's not enough pressure to spray from a gravity-fed hose, I thought a good 12v sprayer would be a good investment--I've even convinced my wife! My mixture of fish emulsion, epsom salts and a sticking agent(dish detergent or vegetable oil) works best when sprayed directly on the plants rather than just watered in....according to the research I've read anyway.

I would think that attaching a 12 spray pump, onto the drum would be easy ennough, and then use a fan tip nozzle (I'll give a few sites to buy form later)

rig it up so it goes like this tank, shut off valve, pump, return to tank valve 3 way, spray wand, nozzle. use the 3 way to MIX by running pump use toggle switch to turn on/off pump and make sure it has bypass run capabilities or auto on-off with a pressure switch to keep from makeing too much pressure, pressure in you're application is BAD. wow, thanks for the info! Actually, where I live it pays to be careful...some of those govt. guys in small planes caught some people in our area a few years ago growing wacky-weed!
