I'm looking to get a Post Hole digger - PTO driven / 3-pt attachable - for my 4600. My local JD Dealer stocks the Greenline EM5000 post hole diggers from Green Manufacturing. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on these units? Also - what are common prices to compare?

I noticed a nice review on @griculture.com of post hole diggers - http://www.agriculture.com/buyersguide/sidebyside/postholedig.html - but I'd like to hear what the TBN community has to say about this stuff... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks!

Might want to post this in the Attachments area instead of a brand specific tractor buying area.

I thought this is Attachments forum.

I purchased a Leinbach with 12" auger in '95 for $446.
Don't know how many holes I've drilled but have worn the cutter out.
Leinbach sent me replacement for less than $20. Prompt service.
Be carefull don't let it "screw" in too deep unless you have reverse on PTO.
You can guess how I know about that. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

gotrocks,
It's in the attachments forum NOW . It was posted in the JD Buying forum. I'm sure many more people will be able to comment here.

I have the FM5500 PHD and love it. The PHD unit goes for around $375.00 on average and the auger around $120.00 (depending on size) on average. Hope this helps you. G

Yes, it was in the JD forum... mostly as I have a JD tractor and was looking at the Green unit at the local JD dealer (Green too)... My fault, as it should have gone in the Attachments Forum. I don't know who moved it - but thanks!

As for prices and sizes - what is the best all around size to go with? I'm going to use it to help me put in horse fencing next year (4x4 posts or better) plus I'm sure I'll find other uses. The green comes in 6, 9, and 12 inch sizes.

I'll have to remember the reverse option - good point! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

IMO, the 6" is useless, unless you're doing 2" metal fence posts.

I think that the 9" would serve you well. G

I have the EM5000 for my smaller JD 4100 and it only has 17 PTO...I'm using a 12" auger with no problems with my type of soil (its not hard pan or clay or rocks)

I'm thinking a bigger unit for your larger machine EM5500 or higher but I think they make a good product that fits great, and if the price is high from the dealer you can buy from them direct..

I use a 12" auger and never wanted a smaller one. The 12" gives you more room for positioning/plumbing posts. Also I use up to 8" round posts which would barely fit in a 9" hole. I don't know about that particular unit but it sounds like the price is right.

The one I have cost me more (Landpride PD25) but has a ratcheting pin clutch so it almost never breaks a shear pin.
