I'm hoping someone can help me answer what I think is a fairly simple question in regards to a BEFCO Series C30 finish mower.

I own a BEFCO C30 Rear Discharge finish mower and I have noticed that I am leaking gearbox oil out of the breather cap on top of the gearbox.

I use the mower on a hill and I suspect that the oil that is leaking out (not a whole lot) is a result of the slope of the hill and the oil sloshing around in the gearbox when it is on the hill.

I keep the oil level in the gearbox between 1/2 and 2/3 full (as recommended in the owners manual) but I notice a slight amount of gearbox oil on the top of the mowing deck after I mow the slope.

Does anyone know if this is normal?

Thanks in advance for your help with this question.

I haven't seen a mower yet that didn't put SOME oil out the breather at times. I think it's a product of the heat stirring it up and pushing out small sums of oil.
It shouldn't be a problem as long as you maintain the proper level. Many mowers have a level plug on the side up to where you put the oil and then it begins to pour out that plug. Most of those I've seen have been somewhere about half way up the side of the gear box.
I don't think you have anything to worry about. John

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you find that you are running completely out of oil.

The fill / breather caps on my howse and KK are a pipe plug with a sizeable hole down the center of it.. say 1/8.. and then a sheet metal cap is loosly crimped on the outside.. litting it jiggle and keep the airway open.

Those gears are gonna throw oil like you wouldn't believe.. might even have a slinger built in.. besides oil seeping out on a hill... there is gonna be some that is simply pumped out by 'splash lube'.

Your welcome. I remember feeling the same way as you the first time I saw oil pouring out of a gear box. I thought, "Well, you've just gotten it, and you've already busted it!"

My BEFCO C50 does the same thing, especially when it's really hot outside. I had a Woods that did the same thing, too. It's just the nature of the design of the gearbox breather systems I suppose. Don't worry about it, just check the oil frequently.
