I have decided a tiller from CCM is the way to go after emailing Mark Carter. They have a 66" tiller or a 72" tiller. I have a Kubota L3830 with HST. Any folks with tillers able to comment on the ability of this relatively small tractor (31 PTO HP) ability to run this width of tiller. The 72" would be as wide as the tires, but I am not familiar with PTO tillers and what it takes power wise to operate one. Another question which I suppose will depend on soil types is how long the blades last. My soil which is primarily decomposd granite and is particularly easy to break up when moist but wears my 8HP Troybilt tiller tines pretty fast. I suppose the same would be true for a 3 point hitch tiller.

I e-mailed them as well on the exact thing. In the MR series (175-190) they only had the 190 as they were sold out of the 175's. HP wise they're rated at 25-70HP. I've been looking on the net here and there on them and seem to be rather stout heavy duty models. One thing I cant find is replacement blades, do yourself a favor and order a replacement set. As far as how your particular soil conditions, it varies greatly, some with hard pan say they last awhile and others get a couple of years with them. So in that instance it really hard to tell.

Kubota recommends the FL1521C tiller for your tractor. This is a 60" tiller.
They recommend the same tiller for all Grande L tractors. Must be the largest they sell.
Some TBN'ers are using 60" tillers on their B27/2910 & B7800 tractors.
Here is a thread that asked a similar question. Click Here

I think many people buy tiller that are too large for their tractor and end up needing to make 1/2 depth passes, and multiple passes. Grumpa said that a tiller was rated for a hp range, but that does not mean the tractor can handle a tiller that size, it simply means that the gearbox on the tiller is capable of working safely with a range of PTO hp. All PTO powered equipment that I've seen has a gearbox that is rated well above the proper tractor size the implement is optimal to be used with, it is a built in safety margin.

All that said, I think you really need to talk with Mark at CCM personally, ask him what size tiller he recommends with the PTO hp your tractor puts out. Tractor manufacturers are typcially concervative in their recommendations, and they are that way for a good reason, they don't want to see you destroy your tractor or be dissatisfied with the performance because your specific SOIL conditions. Implement manufacturers are typically a bit more realistic in what they recommend in terms of size. Different tillers require different PTO hp (because of a lot of different factors).

I agree that people seem to want too much tiller. Mine is a paltry 48" with a side shift to cover my track. Its a whole lot of tiller, and my (30 hp) 3010 works real well with it.

Now, I could have bought a 60" or larger, I guess, but I do my wife's garden and the 2 neighbours' garden in a hour or two in total. We have big gardens.

I understand with an FEL or Snowblower why you wound want a unit at least as wide as the tractor, but this is one instance where I really think thats not necessary.

Besides which, my 48" till is so heavy, I wouldn't want to have to move a bigger one around my garange if I didn't have to.

Ronjhall, Except for the L5030 which is 72" max width for a rotary tiller.

i have the ccm 66" tiller and also have 31 pto hp. it covers my tracks and barely works the engine at all. i dont think i would have any problems running the 72" in my soil, which i am not really sure what it is but you cant put a shovel in the ground without hitting a rock. i have broken 1 tine so far and wasnt that suprised with how many rocks i have, and i could probably use to loosen up my slip clutch a little. you can get the tines from mark, i think its around $17 for 2 with shipping. other than that no problems and happy with it.
