I have a poor man's log skidder. It's a boom pole with a set of old fashioned log tongs. Just be sure to attach the tongs as close to the tractor as possible on the boom pole if you have a small tractor.

I had good luck with a box blade and a length of chain with a slip hook. Back up to the tree, drop the blade, chain the tree up, lift the blade and off you go.
Our L2850 was able to pull several full size trees at once out of the woods over rough terrain. They were limbed already though.

I just hook the log up to the top hook on the quick tach (I-match for me) and either lift the log with a chain or logging tongs. Works very well, and the weight of the log isn't cantilevered several feet behind the tractor. Very inexpensive.

woodcab,
I have the skid steer version, got it from baileys, it works awesome, skids and stacks without leaving the seat, also works great on rocks, big ones for the corners of wall runs. now i just have to adapt it to the 3 pt of the tractor. glenn.

That 3 pt grapple looks to be in the same price range as a tractor mounted logging winch. The winch set up will let you skid several logs at a time as well as winch ones in that you can’t get to with the tractor. I guess you do have to get off the tractor to hook up a log on the winch though.

WoodCab,

How big of a tractor would you be using? Looking at this things weight of almost 700# and the fact it appears to stick out the back quite a bit may limit how much you could really lift/carry without significant counterweight.

At the price listed, I concur with MarkV about looking at a logging winch. There's a current thread about them now (do a search for Farmi).

I'm currently borrowing my Dad's winch but most of my log hauling has been more of the variety everyone else is saying. (basically using tongs or chains connected directly to the tractor or with a standard 3pt implement (boom or blade) if/when needed.
