I sold my NH1920 and upgraded to a TN65D and need to replace my mower. The KK 6' rotary trail mower worked good on my 1920 but with the TN65 it is too small. I mow about 20 acres of field and don't need a mower to chop down trees. What size and type of mower would be a good choice for field use that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg ? I know there are many types of mowers available but the only type I am familar with is the rotary mower. Are the rotaries the most economical to buy and maintain?

You may be able to go to a 10' mower.

I recently was going to purchase a ford 5000 from a local tractor mechanic. they were in the neighborhood of 62 hp as far as I know. I mentioned I wanted a 10' mower and he said it was no problem. I also called the NH dealer and they indicated a 10' would be fine as well.

After looking around alot.. I found 3pt mowers wre less expensive than pull type mowers. I didn't get the ford 5000 but instead got a nh 7610s.. but had little finances left over for a mower.. so i got a howse heavy duty model 10' 3pt mower. It was 2500 taxes and all. The drag model was 800 to 900 more. Next cheapest was a kodiak mower.. again.. 3pt was almost a thou cheaper.

If youhave doubts about the 10' mower.. find an 8' .. but your 65 should be a pretty stout machine.. and like you said.. you'r not mowing trees down.

My 7610s and 10' howse have been great. I can road it down to my pasture a couple miles from my house, mow 10ac, and drive back in just under 3 hours. I mow in 5th gear ( 1st and high ).. works out great.

good luck

If you mow the entire 20 acres, consider a 10 footer. You won't regret it. I've had good luck with Woods, but it seems most of the popular brands are good. Mowing frequently and keeping the blades sharp, a 3 point rotary cutter can do a pretty good imitation of a finishing mower.

Drum mower.
Will mow faster than sickle bar mower.
Will have less part problems than the other mowers.
I bought this 5'5" New drum mower for less than $1000.
But it's not so popular in the US unlike Europe.

Nomad,
Drum mowers are durable & great mowers but this is the wrong application for this customer.

Ken,

I have a Tn70D which is almost the same tractor.
I currently use a fairly heavy duty bush hog 286. Problem is it is only 6'. This is nothing for one of these TNs even in heavy brush. They can definetly handle much bigger.
I will be upgrading to at least a 10' and have been trying to figure out a way to run a 15' batwing.

After a few cuts you will wish that mower is 20' wide.

Hey Ken,
Get a 10 foot pull type. You can mow at 10 mph if you have smooth enough ground and the right gear ratio. Don't bother with a bat wing. I traded my old bat wing on a 10-foot pull type and I'm much better off now. You'll definitely need more hp for a bat wing.

I run a Woods 6' also, the nice thing about the 6' cutter is when cutting around our fences I know I won't hit the post unless I run it over first. Also cutting heavy brush is better with a smaller cutter. But if all I was doing was cutting a field then I would get a 10' pull type cutter.
