    Default Finish Mower

I would like some opinions on 6 foot side discharge 3pt finish mowers. Who makes the best? Pros and Cons. I've never mowed with a 3pt just belly mower, do you push the 3pt all the way down and allow the deck to float on the guide wheels? My favorite so far from just looking is Woods RM 660.

    Craig,
Although I have never seen a side discharge 3pt. finish mower, I do have a Befco rear discharge finish mower. I use it for all of my mowing (pasture and finish mowing). I have to sharpen the blades more often than most people, but I am very happy.
For me, it certainly beats a belly mower, as it allows me to cover a larger area in one pass, and I can back up to mow under tree's, bushes, etc.
And yes, you do lower the 3pt. hitch all the way down, but this is where the models vary - as my mower deck has 4 wheels on the corners that can be adjusted for different heights.
    Good luck, hess.

Craig, I have a 5' Bush Hog brand instead of Befco; otherwise my answer would be the same as Hess said.

I also have a 5ft Bush Hog brand 3pt finish mower. Works great. Let the 3pt all the way down. Its floats on its own wheels. Bush Hog and Land Pride Make good mowers. Haven't looked at or have experience with the other brands of mowers so I can't say anything about them. You just have to remeber the mower is behind you not under you when you turn. That also lets you back into corners or unders trees to reduce trimming.

Craig, I have a Land Pride FD 1560 60" rear discharge, and I like it alot. I've cut grass as high as 6", and never had any clumping problems. I've heard there can be clumping with side discharges, though I've never used one. And as has already been said, you put the 3 point hitch in the lowest position and let the mower run on the four wheels. If you get one the same width as your rear tires its real easy to manuver. However, the side discharge sticks out, so that will make manuvering a little more difficult. From all I've read, and from my experience with a rear discharge, it pays to get a rear discharge. Good luck, what ever you decide!

I have a RM660 Woods side discharge mower that I bought new with my TC33D. I did get a Befco at first with the rear discharge but it was way to loud and didn't cut worth a darn. They told me the gear box was bad so I let them replace it with a new one. Still didn't quiet down any. So they took back at full price and gave me the Woods instead. Haven't been happier. Cut great and discharges fine. I have used it for two years now and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if the need came up. I cut alot of grass a week with this mower and I haven't had any problems with it at all. Scaper
