You hit the nail on the head. My second wife had a small child six years old. Her father had a new tractor. My wife took the child over to her father's home to ride the tractor and while riding the tractor the child fell off and was killed. This tradgedy could have been prevented. Tractors only have one seat for a reason.

Tragic for sure, that can't be argued... but not a valid argument for safety nazis. Children die as a result of well meaning parents for one reason or another everyday. Maybe parents should be outlawed.

If you remove all risk, you remove all life. I'll quit now but quit poking me with that stick. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow, never thought my post would spark that kind of conversation! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I agree that tractors are not a toy, and have to be handled very carefully. But, my dad took me on rides on our neighbors tractor quite a bit, and all along was teaching me safety. Same thing with gun ownership. Can be a great experience, or an utterly tragic experience. Just requires common sense, and a HUGE attention to safety. Gotta' be aware of what's going on around you.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback! I ordered a 48" Gearmore (spelling?) today, should be delivered Monday. And yes, my son will continue to ride on the tractor with me.

I'll try to get some digital pics this weekend and post them next week.

There is none so deaf as those who will not hear. I advise you to let your wife read these posts and get her views on this subject. I repeat, tractors have only one seat for a reason.

I would have to say that guns only have a place for one hand, but uneducated children are killed with them everyday. Tractors only have one seat, but children could find the keys and get themselves hurt or killed by a tractor. I beleive that it is important to teach your kids responsibly about the dangers in life, but I cannot raise a child to fear everything. People get hurt and killed in life many times because they were not taught to use whatever killed them accidentally.

( There is none so deaf as those who will not hear. )So listen up. The man acknowledges an inherent danger in the action, and has stated clearly that for him the danger does not justify completely curtailing the activity. I would never allow a child on with me. I would also never advise a neighbor/friend against it MORE THAN ONCE. After that they are making a conscious choice, and I can't start limiting their choices without inviting limitations to my own.

( I repeat, tractors have only one seat for a reason. ) Do you really think he didn't read this the first time? If there's a new thought or an addition, fine, but it serves no constructive purpose here to repeat. I personally find it completely within bounds to give someone a "heads up" if I think they are doing/suggesting something dangerous. Once given, respect their personal liberty to make choices.

Matt--I think you will be highly disappointed if you go to a 5' box blade. Your tractor's weight, HP and overall footprint really point to a 4' box blade. Haven't had a 1220 on the lot, have seen them, have specs, and have sold small diesel tractors x 10 years.

Just got a 5' BB for my B21, no problems at all on my sandy farm. BTW the book calls for a 450lb BB for ballast.
