I am looking at adding an electric winch to my ever growing list of "must have" tractoring tools. Pulling logs and brush piles out of ravine around the property, pulling truck and car out of mud, and multiple other really good reasons (please help fill in the blanks here, my wife needs to really understand the huge return on investment I will gain from owning a winch). Several questions, will my 3130 electrical handle it? If so, quick disconnects the way to go front and back or, battery jumper style clamps, and best mounting system (Warn chain and plate system?). I am looking at the Warn 4700DC winch, Northern has as good of a deal $450 as I have found on the net. As always, thanks for any advice.

Finally, I have attached pictures of my new tractor at it's new home. Rory

Rory, I'm no expert on winches, but I think that winch requires 300 amps of power and your alternator is far below that. Now I don't know how long the battery could handle it; don't know what battery you have, but I think we have some members who can give you a better answer. My first thought is that you're not going to like it, and might possibly damage your alternator, but I could be wrong.

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I will probably go with a reciever hitch mount and plug in electricals. That way I can use it on my pickup with front and rear receivers also.

If you really want a winch that works, get a hydraulic unit. You can use it on both ends of the tractor and not tax the electrical system.

Amen to what Jerry has to say. I have an hyd 8000lb pull unit permanently mounted into my loader. I use the quick disconnect ports on the back of the tractor. I use a pto for the rear when needed. Building a 3pt quick mount for a winch that could uncoupled and used in the front would be a snap using easy lift couplings, although I would use one on each side of the winch instead of one in the middle. Have fun with it.

Thanks - I did an online for hydraulic units, didn't have much luck finding and affordable unit. Any information on brands would be great. Also there is some benefit to electric, as with Txbaylea, I could also use with my truck.

I'm fixing to do the Milemarker 10,500 set up on a receiver hitch to go on the truck and tractor...uses the Power Steering on the truck and haven't decided on the power steering or hydraulics on the tractor

I have a Warn 6000 series 6000 lb hydraulic winch mounted to a base plate and 2" square stub that I can mount several ways on my Power Trac 1845 that I use for logging.

Electric winches in general are not suited for heavy or continous use and tractor electrical systems also are lower capacity. With the right valve on a hydraulic unit you will have much greater control as you can closely control the speed and direction much better than simply ON/OFF as with an electric model.

While the MileMarker hydraulic is perhaps the best choice for a vehicle, as it runs off the power steering pump, I would go with a regular industrial hydraulic unit that you can better match to the available flow and pressure of your tractor.

Also, the MileMarker uses an electric solenoid control valve that provides just ON/OFF type of control whereas you would use a motor spool valve for a regular hydraulic unit giving you complete variable speed control.

Warn and Ramsey make good units and you can find them on the internet or through commercial truck equipment suppliers.

I used a Milemarker hyd 10,500 winch to build a log skidding winch. I just plug into my remotes on the rear, works super.

Your profile is not complete so I have no idea what tractor you own but most winch manufacturers recommend that your winch be rated at twice the vehicle weight (at least for Jeeps and pickups).

EDIT: (Oops, I missed the 3130 in the subject line.)

No way will jumper cable be usable for connecting it. You will burn something up the first time you try it. You must hard wire the winch to the battery terminals. You can get quick disconnects from Quickcar.net if you want to be able to move it from front to rear.

Use #2 or larger welding cable for the wiring if you run it to the rear.

You will need the heaviest alternator and battery you can get for your tractor if you are going to use it for anything other than emergencies. Regular use will drain the battery very quickly.

Do NOT get the new synthetic winch cable, stick with steel cable. Dirt eats up the synthetic cables quickly.

I am not familiar with the Farmi winches but they seem to be the ones most recommended for tractor use. I believe they are hydraulic and they are expensive.

I have a 4,500# Superwinch that I have used that works well and have a Harbor Freight 8,000# winch on my Jeep that works well. Biggest problem I have had is that the winch drags the Jeep all over the place even with chocks in front of the wheels!

A Warn winch is faster than the HF but I am not in a hurry when winching and for 1/2 the price a Warn would have cost I can wait a few seconds longer.
