For those who have 3pt mounted chippers, will they operate as a shredder for small material, leaves ect?

I have a 5hp Bearcat chipper/shredder. It works well, but is underpowered and physically small for a lot of my stuff now.

My understanding is that 3ph "chippers" do not do a good job on soft vegetation like leaves, because they don't have the "flail" blades that chipper/shredders have.

I have a "Wood Pro AVP" (the "AVP" stands for "all vegetation processor") pto-driven chipper/shredder. In addition to the chipping blades, it has flail blades as well, and does a pretty good job of grinding stuff up. BTW, this machine requires that your tractor have at least 22 pto hp.

Here's a link to the mfr's web page:

WOODPRO AVP

Hope this helps.

Ah... I have 16hp on the pto of my mid-80's Kubota B8200. That would put that model out of the running for me...

I would want one with the extra hammers or knives. I guess my Bearcat would be a hybrid, since it has the chipper, but it is the front of the drum. The back of the drum has flail knives in it. I am really surpassing what the machine can do though.

For best shredding, get a combo machine. I have this one (pic). It is a WW grinder. The company is no longer in business. My 14 PTO HP can handle up to 3" branches - although dry hardwood seems to wear the blades pretty fast.

Woods Equipment makes a pretty good chipper shredder for 3pt that my dealer showed me recently. We were not nearly as impressed with the chipping as we were with the shredding. Drop in some brushy brush, thick or thin and in the blink-of-an-eye, it's dust. The dealer ran it on a Kioti CK20 just like mine and it handled it just fine with 15.5 PTO HP.
Here's a link to their page on this 5" model.

The Woods is a Bear Cat. I have the 20 HP model.
It does a great job of shredding along with chipping.

If they are, they don't look anything like the Woods 5000 I posted about. The 5000 is a manual feed also, and the listed Bearcats are self feed.

When I bought my Woods 5000 there was an identical Bearcat model.

Maybe they discontinued it. I know lots of equipment is made by the same OEM guys and rebadged.
The chipping on the 5000 left a lot to be desired in my opinion, but that shredder! John
