How to Determine PTO RPM\'s ?

Hello All !

I have a B2150 and an Allied/Buhler snowthrower. It's designed to run at 540 RPM's. But How do I know when I hit that RPM speed on the rear PTO ?

What RPM's should the tractor engine be turning to hit this PTO speed ?

I am not fimilar with a B2150.
Does tractor have a Tachometer? If it does, there should be a line around 2000 to 2800 rpms that indicates PTO 540 RPM's.

Yes it has a mark on the tachometer for 540 Ron. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well here is a good answer -> our Kubota L-3130 has a live PTO rpm tachometer specifically monitoring the PTO rpms from 0-540 rpms in real-time, not some spot on the engine RPM tachometer where the PTO should be running at 540rpms.

There may just be a line.. or it could say 540 or 538.. or could have a graphic of a small gear spinning.

When I got home last night, I went over to the orange beast and looked at the dash.

YUP ! Sure enough, there "IS" a line at about 2500 RPM that says "PTO 540". I've had the tractor for almost 7 years and never really paid attention.

Now... as a follow up question.

Can I run the engine at a "Higher" RPM and exceed the PTO RPM's of 540 without damaging my snowthrower?

I was running it at about 2800-3000 since it would throw the snow farther at the higher speed.

I really don't "think" it would hurt it, but would like some input from more educated operators.

TimP, you've had the tractor for 7 years, and you've been running the snowblower at 2800rpm, which is something over the 540 PTO rpm all this time. I think you answered your own question.

But consider the gearing. It takes 2500 engine RPM to get the PTO to run at 540, so there is ROUGHLY a 5 to 1 gear down. Running at 3000 engine RPM is going to put the PTO RPM at roughly 600? I suspect there is enough safetly factor engineered into the gear box of the snowblower to handle that.
