I just recently bought a Kubota L3130 Tractor replacing my Ford 8n after years of great use...I purchace a 5' Gearmore Mower from the Kubota dealer, This rotary mower is teribble to use its leaves skid marks all over my field if I try to mow shorter than 4" The dealer has tried as have I every setting but it wont mow low at all, plus if I back up while mowing it just tears up the ground...So I am selling it and buying a new mower that will mow low without tearing up my field....Which one is the best???? My ford with the rusted out mower never did this

Welcome to Tbn ! And Hello !
I don't know what you would call best . But , Brown and Befco make some really HD stuff .
But to me 4" is a bit close for any brush hog .
Have You given any thought to a Rear finish mower ? John

This is the hieght that I have always mowed this field and my neighbors Ford 1710 will mow it nicely at that height without leaving a mark as did my 1948 Ford........I am really dissapointed with this product...

If you want to mow close, look for a brand that does not have the blades recessed up in the deck as far as the brand you now own. Look at the design of the skids to be sure if you back up with the mower lowered they won't tear up the sod. Adjust the mower level from front to back and use the tailwheel adjustment to set your cutting height. Don't mow with the skids on the ground. Don't make sharp turns with the machine lowered to cutting height. There is no best brand, that is what keeps the rest of them in business.

countryboy2653,
Say it isn't So, but that Gearmore cutter you purchased is made by King Kutter. The Premium shortline brands are Servis-Rhino, Bush Hog, Woods, & Land Pride.

Pictured is Rhino's SE-5 cutter. It is designed for a tractor like yours.

It's hard to say which is "best" ... there are a lot of good brands out there such as Rhino. I have a Modern and it is a very solid unit and is galvanized. The build quality of the Modern is second to none.

My vote goes to Woods. I have used all the "name brands" over the years. Woods is as good as any, and better than most. They are available (and so are the PARTS) at many outlets throughout the country. Woods is PROBABLY the most common GOOD brand on the market. Their warrenty is good as gold. If I was buying ANOTHER mower today, it would be between Woods and Bush Hog. Woods wins in a tie, with the ease of finding a dealer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That Modern "Competitor" looks nice! They don't have much detail on them as far as pictures though.

The Deere MX series looks to be pretty tough also.

That's a toughy. I mow alot with a 5' KK from TSC.. course.. as you had.. I use an 8n or NAA.. andI also have stabilizer bars to prevent side to side movement.. and they help to keep the deck level during a turn.

Not sure what your mowers issue was.. but perhaps the deck and skids were just keeping the blades too high off the ground?

I'm not sure if it's offered in 5', but check out the new Servis Cyclone with dual tailwheels. The deck isn't measured in "guage" and will last.
