Well, I bought that 12 ft springtooth harrow today at the auction. Of course, I spent the entire day waiting, but it was worth it. I paid $85 for it. Took it home on my car hauler trailer, unloaded it with the FEL, installed new cat 1 pins to fit my cat 1 lift arms and presto! I dragged it around for 10 minutes and it seemed to work great. I only pulled it in low range, and adjusted it to only dig a couple inches.

thanks to everyone for their input.

$85 is a good deal. You will find a use for it and maybe it will work with your soil type if your humps and holes arent that bad but one way or the other it was a great buy at $85.

$85 sounds like a great deal for the seemingly good shape that its in. Glad it's working out for you. You will have to play with it at different depths and speed combinations. You'll find the one that's right for you. Have fun.

I think one reason I got it pretty cheap, is that I was bidding against the local scrap iron guy!

When I told my teenage son, he said, "Dad, catch a clue!"

I used one last year prepping my yard, which used to be a corn field, and it worked fine. The soil here in PA is full of rocks and mostly clay. I made multiple passes up/down, criss/cross and diagonal. Then I used a rake to gather up the loose weed/grass matter that tends to ball up in the harrow. Biggest issue was all the rocks and the rake gathered them together also and it served to level the field out and fill in the low spot. Not the best tool for the job, but it's adequate.

I used a disc to "break up" my lawn-to-be, then ran a harrow (the kind with teeth like a hay rake) over the top. After I seeded, I drug a 6' section of chain-link fence over everything to smooth it down. Worked rather well.
