What are most 3 pt tillers rated to penetrate the soil?

I think the deepest setting on mine is 8". For a 72" tiller, that's a load to turn. Maybe others can tell you how deep theirs till. I'm sure it varies with the make of tiller.

I have a KK II tiller.
I believe it is listed at 6" tilling depth

I have a 72" King cutter and it says 8 inches but keep in mind that is a round-about figure. If the ground is really hard and your making first pass ever then it will struggle to go that deep. You will want to make 2 passes or 3. Each pass it will get deeper and deeper because the weight of tiller will be sinking into the loosened dirt getting it down deeper. I always make 2 passes when I till a garden and it gets at least 8 inches deep. On new ground you may want to make 3 passes but it also depends on how fast you go. One thing is for sure, A second pass will always go deeper since the guides that rest on the ground will be on hard ground on first pass limiting the depth and the second pass they will sink in the loosened dirt 2 or 3 inches or so but will till deeper and make a much better looking job.

Well, I just looked at a King Kutter tiller flyer and it lists my tiller as 8" depth. But TSC lists this same tiller as 6" depth.
I believe 6".

Agree with Roto--

I can set my skid shoes for max depth (about 6-8") and it will hop and bounce and I have to go slow to get that depth.

In less time, I can set the skid shoes for 3-4", go faster and make two passes. Besides, you can tell from the sound that it's much easier on the tiller.

Kubota's manual for my tiller says it will get 7". But may require more than one pass to get that depth.

I have a 70" Landpride, book said max depth is 7". I can do this in one pass. It has to be very hard to hold that heavy tiller out of the ground.

A tiller will till up to 40-50% of the scroll diameter. Most standard tillers have a scroll diameter of 15-18". The scroll diameter is the diameter of the circle that the tines are turning from tip to tip. As the scroll diameter increases so does the HP requirements if you tilling at full depth capacity.

A lot depends on the "loft" of the tilled soil. Like CCI stated 40-50%, but in sandy soil it will go deeper.

Also remember that the tiller will tend to "fluf" the soil so the tilled soil will stand higher than the untilled soil making for a very nice deep seed bed.

My folks have sandy garden soil, and my tiller runs very deep. So deep that it will fill up under the frame if you don't keep moving or set the gate to a very high position.
